Choose the part of Ratatan you want

Ratatan's official Steam description combines rhythm commands for Cobuns, freely moving leaders, side-scrolling action and roguelike adventures with up to four players online. No candidate below replaces every part of that combination. Official pages linked here were checked on ; the recommendations are editorial judgments about those documented mechanics.

  • For a singing army: PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY is the closest fit for rhythm-based squad commands.
  • For direct character action: Hi-Fi RUSH puts music at the center of combat rather than army management.
  • For changing dungeon runs: Crypt of the NecroDancer is the strongest fit for beat-driven roguelike decisions.

PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY: for rhythm-command armies

Why it fits: four drums issue commands to a squad of Patapons. Different classes fill different combat roles, and materials and equipment let you develop the army. That makes it the first recommendation for players who enjoy directing Cobuns more than moving a hero. Sources: Bandai Namco's official overview and the official Steam listing, checked 16 October 2026.

The difference: REPLAY remasters the first two Patapon games; it is not Patapon 4. Its progression centers on stages, army development and equipment, rather than Ratatan's advertised roguelike adventures. Steam lists this edition as single-player, not online co-op. Choose it for a solo rhythm-strategy campaign, not as a replacement for a four-player Ratatan session. See the side-by-side Patapon comparison.

Hi-Fi RUSH: for music-synced character action

Why it fits: Chai, his surroundings and combat synchronize with music. It suits players drawn to Ratatan's musical action but interested in controlling a central fighter instead of issuing squad orders. The official Hi-Fi RUSH Steam page, checked 16 October 2026, lists single-player and describes its rhythm combat.

The difference: this is not an army-command game or a four-player co-op alternative. Its Arcade Challenge update includes BPM RUSH enemy waves and Power Up! Tower Up!, which gives a weakened Chai randomized upgrades while climbing a combat tower. Those extra modes offer repeatable challenges, but they should not be confused with Ratatan's core squad-based roguelike structure. Pick it for a solo action adventure with music driving the presentation.

Crypt of the NecroDancer: for rhythm roguelike runs

Why it fits: move to the beat through a changing dungeon, fight enemies and collect equipment. Diamonds unlock permanent upgrades, making it a useful alternative when Ratatan's repeated adventures and timing decisions are the attraction. The official NecroDancer Steam page, checked 16 October 2026, describes these systems and lists single-player and shared/split-screen co-op.

The difference: you navigate a dungeon character rather than lead a marching Cobun army. The base game's shared-screen co-op is also not the same feature as Ratatan's online co-op. Choose it for beat-by-beat dungeon decisions, or investigate that local co-op option if playing on one system matters more than commanding a squad. Do not assume every edition or DLC has identical multiplayer features.

If playing with friends is the deciding factor

Ratatan supports offline solo play and up to four players online, but not local co-op, according to its Full Release FAQ. Crossplay is a separate issue: the 16 October 2026 developer update says it is still being worked on and needs platform approval, with no launch date. That conflicts with the older FAQ's claim of partial crossplay support. Do not buy different-platform copies on the assumption that friends can already join each other.

Among these three alternatives, REPLAY and Hi-Fi RUSH are listed as single-player on Steam; NecroDancer lists shared-screen co-op. None is presented here as a verified substitute for Ratatan's four-player online army battles. For Ratatan itself, use the official store links and check the multiplayer guide before choosing copies for a group.
